t4w Personal Trainer Blog: Never too late for exercise!

exercise-runningWell, the British Journal of Sports Medicine has followed 3,500 people and can now tell us what we have always suspected – age is no barrier to exercise and exercising is good for you!

The study shows that those of us who take up exercise in our 60s are three times more likely to remain healthy over the next 8 years than those who don’t.  Exercise cuts the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, Alzheimer’s and depression. Seriously – what is there not to like about it?!

Those that undertake moderate or vigorous physical activity at least once a week are three or four times more likely to be healthy agers than those who are inactive. The Lead Investigator goes on to say that you don’t have to go for a run or go to the gym – just gardening or going for a walk all counts as exercise – just get moving!

The guidance from the Department of Health is that adults, including those over 65, do 150 minutes of physical activity a week.
