Do you know your sun signs from your decans?

Some people relate strongly to their birth sign, some identify with a few typical traits, yet others hardly recognise themselves at all. One of the main astrological reasons for this is the division of Sun signs into three segments of ten, which are referred to as Decanates – or Decans.
Each zodiac sign is ruled by a particular planet. Each Decan is also ruled by a planet, creating a ‘sub-ruler’ of the sign. This is where it gets exciting, as it means we can begin to differentiate not only between zodiac signs, but also within the signs, giving us more detail about the multiple types of Sun sign ‘personality’ – not just the same old 12 that most people have heard of!
When we refer to someone’s ‘Sun’ sign, or ‘birth’ sign, we mean one of the famous 12 zodiac signs that the Sun was moving through in the sky at the time of birth: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces represent four-weekly transitions across the main quarters of the year and so are especially closely linked to the changes in seasons through the solstices and equinoxes.
With Aries marking the start of Spring, each sign symbolically occupies a 30 degree span of the zodiac belt, correlating loosely with the months of the year. The position of the first degree of each zodiac sign usually coincides with the 20th day of each month and this point also marks the First Decan of that sign. The start of the Second Decan coincides with the date 10 days further on – and so on, through approximately thirty days per sign.
